A Message to Parents
Welcome, parents, and thank you for taking the time to look at Foundations for College Writing. I'm glad you're here.
My name is Jason Frieling, and I currently serve as an instructional designer at Cedarville University. Before stepping into this role, I spent more than two decades teaching English in public schools in Michigan. Those years included middle school language arts as well as high school English at the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade levels, including honors English and AP Language and Composition.
My connection to this course is also deeply personal. My wife and I homeschooled our two daughters all the way through graduation, so I understand both the privilege and the weight of helping students grow as writers at home. Over the years, many homeschooling parents have asked for guidance, encouragement, and practical help as they prepared their students for college-level writing. This course was built out of that need.
Teaching writing can feel intimidating. It asks for patience, practice, feedback, and a long view of growth. But it is not impossible, and parents do not have to shoulder that challenge alone. Foundations for College Writing is meant to be one helpful pathway for families who want to prepare students thoughtfully and well for the writing demands that come after high school.
My hope is that this course will serve you as you serve your students. I hope it gives you useful tools, clear direction, and confidence for the journey ahead. And if questions arise along the way, please feel free to reach out. If I can help, I would be glad to do so.
